How To Format With Windows 98

Warning! All data in the Windows 98 directory will be deleted! This includes data files for Outlook and Windows Outlook Express.

You will need the following things to reinstall on this machine:

Windows 98 CD
Windows 98 Certificate of Authenticity Product key (Located on the front of the Windows 98 Owners manual)
WinBook Xl2 Device Drivers CD
ATI DVD Player CD
Blank 1.44 MB Floppy Disk

Changing The Boot Sequence to allow booting from the Windows 98 CD.

As the computer is starting up, you will see the message Press DEL for Setup. Press the DEL key until you see the blue Setup Screen. Use the Down Arrow key to move to the Advanced CMOS Setup menu. Press the ENTER key once. Use the Down Arrow key to highlight BOOT SEQUENCE. Press the PgUp key till the setting is CD-ROM,A:,C:. Press the ESC key once. Press the F10 key once. When asked if you wish to save changes, press Y and then Enter.

Power up the laptop with the Windows 98 CD-ROM in the machine. The machine will boot to the CD and bring you to a Microsoft Windows 98 CD-ROM Startup Menu. Arrow down to option 2. Boot from CD-ROM and press the Enter key.
This will bring up to another Windows98 startup menu. On this menu select option 2. Start computer with CD-ROM support and press the Enter key. The machine will continue to boot and then take you to an A:\> prompt.
At the A:\> prompt, type FDISK and press the Enter key.
It will ask you if you want to enable large disk support. Press Y and press Enter.
Choose option 3, Delete partition or Logical DOS drive.
Choose option 1, Delete DOS Partition.
Select the partition you want to delete. You are typically going to delete partition 1 C: PRI-DOS partition. Caution: The Non-DOS partition is your suspend to disk partition. You do not want to delete it.
Enter the Volume Label for the drive exactly as listed in the FDISK menu and press Enter. Note: If there is nothing listed under volume label, just press Enter.
When prompted, "Are you sure (Y/N)," press Y and press Enter. After you confirm the deletion, the program will then tell you that the Primary DOS partition is deleted.
Press the ESC key.
You will now be on the first screen of FDISK. Choose option 1, Create DOS partition or Logical DOS Drive.
Choose option 1 Create Primary DOS Partition.
FDISK will then verify the drive integrity for a couple of seconds. When it asks you if you want the maximum available size, press Y and press Enter. It will then verify the drive integrity one more time and then say you must restart your system for your changes to take effect.
Press ESC to exit FDISK. This will take you back to another A:\> prompt. At this point, turn off the computer.

Reinstalling Windows 98

Turn the Computer back on.
Select 2. Boot from CD-ROM and press Enter.
A screen will come up with 3 selections. Select 2. Start computer with CD-ROM support and press Enter.
At the MS-DOS prompt, type D:\ and press Enter. Type in CD win98 and press Enter.
Type in format /u c: and press Enter.
Next a message will say WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE C: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)? Press Y and then Enter.
After format is complete, you will have to enter a Volume Label. Press Enter.
At the D:\Win98> MS-DOS prompt, type setup /P J and press Enter.
Windows 98 Setup will now perform a routine scan of your Hard Disk. Press Enter to continue.
This will take you to the Windows 98 Setup screen.
Press Enter to continue.
This will begin copying the Windows 98 Setup files onto your hard drive.
Now Windows 98 Setup will ask you what directory you would like to have Windows 98 installed on.

Note:

Once the directory has been selected click the Next button. Windows 98 Setup will begin setting up the directory.
Setup will then ask for any options you may have. We suggest using the selection Typical. Click on the Next button.
Windows 98 Setup will then ask you what other components you would like to setup. Use Install with the most common components (Recommended). Click Next to continue.
The next screen will prompt you for your Computer name, Workgroup name, and Computer description. Once this information has been entered, click the Next button.
Setup will now prompt you to establish the location that you are at. Make a Country selection and click the Next button.
Windows 98 Setup Wizard will now prompt you to make a Startup disk. Insert a blank 3.5 1.44 MB "High Density" floppy disk. Click the OK button.
Click the OK button.
After it copies the system files needed for the Startup Disk, it will prompt you to remove the Startup disk. Remove the disk and click on the OK button.
Windows 98 Setup Wizard will now announce that it will begin copying files. Click the Next button.
The Welcome to Windows 98 Setup will display. Windows 98 Setup Wizard will begin to copy files and will prompt you to reboot the system when finished. Click on the OK button.
It will then prompt you to restart. Click on the Restart Now button.
When the unit boots up it will come to a menu. Select 1. Boot from Hard Disk option and press Enter.
When it boots into Windows 98, The Windows 98 Setup Wizard will prompt you to type a User name and Company name.
Once done, click Next.
Windows 98 Setup will then display the Software License Agreement. If you agree to the terms of the License, click the "I accept the agreement selection" to install Windows 98.

Note:

Once you have made a selection, click the Next button.
The Windows 98 Setup Wizard will then prompt you for your Windows 98 Product Key. Your Windows 98 Product key is located on the front of your Windows 98 manual.
When you are finished, click the Next button.
On this next Windows Setup 98 Wizard screen, Windows 98 will report that it has saved all information. Click the Finish button.
Windows 98 Setup will now initialize the Drivers Database and begin setting up any Plug and Play Devices.
Windows 98 Setup will then start the PC card (PCMCIA Wizard). It is recommended to use the default selections and click on the NO button and click on the Next button.
Use the default setting that is highlighted which is No and click on the Next button.
This screen will prompt you to finish the PCMCIA installation. Click on the Finish button.
Windows 98 Setup will continue setting up all Plug and Play devices and also detect all Non Plug and Play Devices.
When it has finished, it will begin installing more Plug and Play drivers Windows 98 and Setup will again prompt you to restart the unit. Click on the Restart Now button, or allow the automatic timer to re-boot the system after 15 seconds.
Again select 1. Boot from Hard Disk and press Enter.
Windows 98 Setup will now prompt you for the Date and Time and the Time Zone. Enter this information if the Time and Date information is not correct.
Select the Time Zone tab and select the proper Time Zone. Once this is done, click on the Apply button and then click on the OK button.
Windows 98 Setup will start updating System Settings and prompt you to re-boot the system when finished. Click on the Restart Now button.
Select 1. Boot from Hard Disk and press Enter.
Windows 98 Setup Wizard will now begin to setup more hardware.
When it boots into Windows 98, it will prompt you for a User name and a Password.
After the User name has been entered, click on the OK button or press Enter. Windows 98 Setup Wizard will finish setting up the system. It will then find New hardware and the unit will then boot completely in to Windows 98 and the Welcome to Windows 98 screen will appear.
For the moment, close the Welcome to Windows 98 box by clicking on the X box in the upper right corner.

Updating the Video Driver and Monitor

Click Start. Go to Settings, then click on Control Panel. Double click on the Display icon. Find the Settings tab across the top and click on it. Click on the Advanced button.
Click on the Monitor tab. Click on Change. The Manufacturer highlighted here should be Standard Monitor Types. You want to highlight the model to be Laptop Display Panel (1024 x 768). Click OK. Now, back at the Monitor tab, click Apply.
Go to the Adapter tab. Click Change. The Update Device Driver Wizard appears. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next. In this window, click Have Disk. Where it says "Copy manufacturer's files from", delete A:\. Remove the Windows 98 CD from the CD-ROM and insert the WinBook XL2 Device Drivers CD into the CD-ROM. Wait until the CD-ROM quits flashing yellow and then type in D:\video and click OK.
Highlight the first RAGE LT PRO AGP 2X (English)[2-5-1999] and click OK. Click Next again. When install is complete, click Finish. Now click Apply. A refresh rate warning window pops up. Click OK. The next window says that the changes will not take effect until restart. Click OK.
Find the Screen Area slider bar. Click on the slider and move to the far right where it says More. Click Apply. You must restart warning pops up. Click Yes.
Once back into windows, you will notice the control panel still open, plus a new window open. It is the desktop help for the video chipset. Close that window.
In the control panel, double click on Display. Click on the Settings tab. Find the pull down menu for Colors. Click on 256 Color and pick High Color (16 bit). Click Apply. A compatibility warning pops up. Make sure the dot beside "Apply the new color settings without restarting" is filled in and click OK.
Click OK in the Settings tab to close Display properties.

Updating the ESS sound card

In the Control Panel still, double click on the System icon.
Click on the Device Manager tab.
Now find the category called Other Devices. Branching out from it are two listings. Double click on the PCI Multimedia Device. Click on the Driver tab across the top. Click on Update Driver.
The Update Device Driver Wizard appears. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next. In the next list, highlight Sound, video, and game controllers and click Next. Click on Have Disk and then where it says "Copy manufacturer's files from," delete the A:\. Type in d:\audio and click OK. Windows will say that it found the ESS Device Manager, click on the OK button. Click on the Next button.
Windows will copy some files and then ask you to insert you Windows 98 CD-ROM. Remove your WinBook XL2 Device Drivers CD and insert your Windows 98 CD. Press the OK button.
After Windows copies some files click on the Finish button.
Then click Close.

Updating the Modem

Back at the Device Manager. The Other Devices category has only one listing now.
If the listing is a PCI Communication Device, proceed to Updating the ESS PCI Modem. If the listing is an Unknown Device, proceed to Updating the LT Winmodem.

Updating the LT Win Modem

Double-click on the Unknown Device located under the Other Devices icon.
Click on the Driver tab.
Click on the Update Driver button, and click on the Next button.
Click on "Search for a better driver than the one you are currently using," and then click on the Next button.
Place a check mark in the Specify a location box by clicking on the box and delete the A:.
Remove the Windows 98 CD from the CD-ROM and insert the WinBook XL2 Device Drivers CD into the CD-ROM. Wait until the CD-ROM quits flashing yellow and then type in D:\modem and click OK.
Click on the Next button.
Windows 98 will search the driver files and find the LT Win Modem.
Click on the Next button.
Windows 98 will also find a Wave Device and will prompt you to allow the Add New Hardware Wizard to search for updated drivers for it. Click on the Next button.
The "Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended)", should be highlighted.
Click on the Next button.
Place a check mark in the Specify a location by clicking on the box. Note: The correct location should still be typed in the path.
It will find the Voice Modem Serial Wave Device.
Click on the Next button.
Click on the Finish button to finish installing the driver.
Click on the Finish button to finish installing the LT Win Modem.
Click on the Resources tab.
Remove the check mark from Use automatic settings box.
Scroll down and click on the Direct Memory Access 07 line.
Click on the Change Settings button.
Using the small down arrow on the screen and change setting to 05, and click on the OK button.
Click on the OK button again to close out the LT Win Modem Properties.
Windows 98 will say that you have "Created a Forced Configuration." Click on the Yes button to finish.
Windows 98 will then need to be restarted to finish installing the LT Win Modem.
Click the Yes button to shut down and restart the system.

Updating the ESS PCI Modem

Back at the desktop, Control Panel will still be open. Double click on the System icon. Click on the Device Manager tab. The Other Devices category has only one listing under it now. Double click on the PCI Communication Device. Click on the Driver tab.
Click on Update Driver. The Update Device Driver Wizard appears. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next. A models window appears. Highlight Modem and then click Next. A models window appears with ESS Device Manager highlighted click the Next Button.
An Add new hardware wizard appears searching for drivers for an Unknown Device. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next. Find and highlight Modem and click Next.
Now click Have Disk. Where it says Copy manufacturer's files from, delete A:\. Remove the Windows 98 CD from the CD-ROM and insert the WinBook XL2 Device Drivers CD into the CD-ROM. Wait until the CD-ROM quits flashing yellow and then type in D:\audio and click OK.
A Models window appears with ESS Device Manager[12-30-1998] highlighted. Click Next. Click Next again.
An Add new hardware wizard appears searching for drivers for an Unknown Device. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next. Find and highlight Modem and click Next.
Now click Have Disk. Where it says Copy manufacturer's files from, delete A:\ and type in D:\audio and click OK.
A Models window appears with ESS ES56CVH-PI Data Fax Voice Modem [12-30-1998] highlighted. Click Next. Click Next again.
An Insert Disk Window appears click . The file that Windows 98 is looking for a file is called ESDM98.CAT. Click on Skip File. Once done click on Finish. Click Finish again. Now click Close.
Back in Device Manager there is now a category called Modem with a listing branching from it that has no description, just a phone icon and a yellow exclamation mark. Double click on this line and the click on the Resources tab. Click on Set Configuration Manually.
Take the check mark out of the Use Automatic Settings box. Settings Based On is a drop down menu. Click on Basic Configuration 0000 and select Basic Configuration 0002. Click OK. A forced configuration warning appears. Click Yes.
An Add New Hardware Wizard appears looking for drivers for a blank space. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next.
Now click Have Disk. Where it says Copy manufacturer's files from, delete A:\ and type in D:\audio and click OK.
A Models windows pops up with the ESS ES56CVH-PI Data Fax Voice Modem [12-30-1998] highlighted. Click Next. Now click Next again. A copying files warning pops up, click OK. The file that Windows 98 is looking for is file called ESDM98.CAT. Click on Skip File. A copying files warning pops up, click OK. It is looking for inst32i.ex_, delete A:\ and type in D:\audio and click OK. Another copying files warning pops up, click OK. The file that Winndows 98 is looking for a file is called ESDM98.CAT. Click on Skip File. Then click Finish.
Windows will then find the Wave Device for Voice Modem. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next. Click Have Disk. Delete the A:\ and type in d:\audio and click OK. Make sure Voice Modem Serial Wave Device is highlighted and click OK. Then click Next. Now finally, click Finish.

Updating the IrDA v3.0 Fast Infrared Port

Double-click on the IrDA v3.0 Fast Infrared Port, located under the Network Adapters icon.
Click on the Resources tab.
Click on the Set Configuration Manually button.
Remove the check mark from Use automatic settings.
Click on the arrow beside the Settings based on box.
Select Basic configuration 0003.
Click on the Direct Memory Access setting.
Click on the Change Setting button.
Click on the small Up arrow and change the Value to 03.
Click on the OK button.
Click on the OK button to close the IrDA v3.0 Fast Infrared Port Properties.
You will get a box that pops up stating that you are "Creating a Forced Configuration."
Click on the Yes button. Windows 98 will inform you that "You have made changes to your hardware settings and that before your devices will work you must restart your system." Click on the Yes button.

Note: This will power the computer off completely. You will need to press the Power button to allow the unit to come back on.

Installing the DVD player Software

After the computer has powered back up and is at the desktop, close the Control Panel. Remove the check mark from the box that says Show this screen each time Windows 98 starts. Insert the DVD player software CD in to the CD-ROM.
The CD will autoplay and this will bring up an ATI Setup window.
Click the Next button.
This will display the License Agreement. If you agree to the terms, click on "I agree with this agreement" and click on the Next button.
It will be default to the Express Setup. Click Next.
It will begin installing the DVD player and the drivers. It will stop at an ATI Setup screen that will ask you for the Region you are in and give you six regions to choose from. Make your selection and click on the Finish button.
You can read the Read Me now or later. Your DVD player software has now been installed. Click Yes or No to continue.
You must restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Updating DirectX

Remove the Ati Software CD and insert the WinBook XL2 Device Drivers CD.
Back at the desktop, click on Start. Click on Run. Type in d:\directx\dx61core and press Enter.
Click on Yes to continue.
Agree to the license agreement by pressing Yes.
Once setup has completed, click OK.
If Windows asks to restart, click OK or Yes. If not, you are done.

Windows will copy some files and then ask you to insert you Windows 98 CD-ROM. Remove your WinBook XL2 Device Drivers CD and insert your Windows 98 CD. Press the OK button.
After Windows copies some files click on the Finish button.
Then click Close.

Updating the Modem

Back at the Device Manager. The Other Devices category has only one listing now.
If the listing is a PCI Communication Device, proceed to Updating the ESS PCI Modem. If the listing is an Unknown Device, proceed to Updating the LT Winmodem.

Updating the LT Win Modem

Double-click on the Unknown Device located under the Other Devices icon.
Click on the Driver tab.
Click on the Update Driver button, and click on the Next button.
Click on "Search for a better driver than the one you are currently using," and then click on the Next button.
Place a check mark in the Specify a location box by clicking on the box and delete the A:.
Remove the Windows 98 CD from the CD-ROM and insert the WinBook XL2 Device Drivers CD into the CD-ROM. Wait until the CD-ROM quits flashing yellow and then type in D:\modem and click OK.
Click on the Next button.
Windows 98 will search the driver files and find the LT Win Modem.
Click on the Next button.
Windows 98 will also find a Wave Device and will prompt you to allow the Add New Hardware Wizard to search for updated drivers for it. Click on the Next button.
The "Search for the best driver for your device (Recommended)", should be highlighted.
Click on the Next button.
Place a check mark in the Specify a location by clicking on the box. Note: The correct location should still be typed in the path.
It will find the Voice Modem Serial Wave Device.
Click on the Next button.
Click on the Finish button to finish installing the driver.
Click on the Finish button to finish installing the LT Win Modem.
Click on the Resources tab.
Remove the check mark from Use automatic settings box.
Scroll down and click on the Direct Memory Access 07 line.
Click on the Change Settings button.
Using the small down arrow on the screen and change setting to 05, and click on the OK button.
Click on the OK button again to close out the LT Win Modem Properties.
Windows 98 will say that you have "Created a Forced Configuration." Click on the Yes button to finish.
Windows 98 will then need to be restarted to finish installing the LT Win Modem.
Click the Yes button to shut down and restart the system.

Updating the ESS PCI Modem

Back at the desktop, Control Panel will still be open. Double click on the System icon. Click on the Device Manager tab. The Other Devices category has only one listing under it now. Double click on the PCI Communication Device. Click on the Driver tab.
Click on Update Driver. The Update Device Driver Wizard appears. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next. A models window appears. Highlight Modem and then click Next. A models window appears with ESS Device Manager highlighted click the Next Button.
An Add new hardware wizard appears searching for drivers for an Unknown Device. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next. Find and highlight Modem and click Next.
Now click Have Disk. Where it says Copy manufacturer's files from, delete A:\. Remove the Windows 98 CD from the CD-ROM and insert the WinBook XL2 Device Drivers CD into the CD-ROM. Wait until the CD-ROM quits flashing yellow and then type in D:\audio and click OK.
A Models window appears with ESS Device Manager[12-30-1998] highlighted. Click Next. Click Next again.
An Add new hardware wizard appears searching for drivers for an Unknown Device. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next. Find and highlight Modem and click Next.
Now click Have Disk. Where it says Copy manufacturer's files from, delete A:\ and type in D:\audio and click OK.
A Models window appears with ESS ES56CVH-PI Data Fax Voice Modem [12-30-1998] highlighted. Click Next. Click Next again.
An Insert Disk Window appears click . The file that Windows 98 is looking for a file is called ESDM98.CAT. Click on Skip File. Once done click on Finish. Click Finish again. Now click Close.
Back in Device Manager there is now a category called Modem with a listing branching from it that has no description, just a phone icon and a yellow exclamation mark. Double click on this line and the click on the Resources tab. Click on Set Configuration Manually.
Take the check mark out of the Use Automatic Settings box. Settings Based On is a drop down menu. Click on Basic Configuration 0000 and select Basic Configuration 0002. Click OK. A forced configuration warning appears. Click Yes.
An Add New Hardware Wizard appears looking for drivers for a blank space. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next.
Now click Have Disk. Where it says Copy manufacturer's files from, delete A:\ and type in D:\audio and click OK.
A Models windows pops up with the ESS ES56CVH-PI Data Fax Voice Modem [12-30-1998] highlighted. Click Next. Now click Next again. A copying files warning pops up, click OK. The file that Windows 98 is looking for is file called ESDM98.CAT. Click on Skip File. A copying files warning pops up, click OK. It is looking for inst32i.ex_, delete A:\ and type in D:\audio and click OK. Another copying files warning pops up, click OK. The file that Winndows 98 is looking for a file is called ESDM98.CAT. Click on Skip File. Then click Finish.
Windows will then find the Wave Device for Voice Modem. Click Next. Fill in the dot beside "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want" and click Next. Click Have Disk. Delete the A:\ and type in d:\audio and click OK. Make sure Voice Modem Serial Wave Device is highlighted and click OK. Then click Next. Now finally, click Finish.

Updating the IrDA v3.0 Fast Infrared Port

Double-click on the IrDA v3.0 Fast Infrared Port, located under the Network Adapters icon.
Click on the Resources tab.
Click on the Set Configuration Manually button.
Remove the check mark from Use automatic settings.
Click on the arrow beside the Settings based on box.
Select Basic configuration 0003.
Click on the Direct Memory Access setting.
Click on the Change Setting button.
Click on the small Up arrow and change the Value to 03.
Click on the OK button.
Click on the OK button to close the IrDA v3.0 Fast Infrared Port Properties.
You will get a box that pops up stating that you are "Creating a Forced Configuration."
Click on the Yes button. Windows 98 will inform you that "You have made changes to your hardware settings and that before your devices will work you must restart your system." Click on the Yes button.

Note: This will power the computer off completely. You will need to press the Power button to allow the unit to come back on.

Installing the DVD player Software

After the computer has powered back up and is at the desktop, close the Control Panel. Remove the check mark from the box that says Show this screen each time Windows 98 starts. Insert the DVD player software CD in to the CD-ROM.
The CD will autoplay and this will bring up an ATI Setup window.
Click the Next button.
This will display the License Agreement. If you agree to the terms, click on "I agree with this agreement" and click on the Next button.
It will be default to the Express Setup. Click Next.
It will begin installing the DVD player and the drivers. It will stop at an ATI Setup screen that will ask you for the Region you are in and give you six regions to choose from. Make your selection and click on the Finish button.
You can read the Read Me now or later. Your DVD player software has now been installed. Click Yes or No to continue.
You must restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

Updating DirectX

Remove the Ati Software CD and insert the WinBook XL2 Device Drivers CD.
Back at the desktop, click on Start. Click on Run. Type in d:\directx\dx61core and press Enter.
Click on Yes to continue.
Agree to the license agreement by pressing Yes.
Once setup has completed, click OK.
If Windows asks to restart, click OK or Yes. If not, you are done.
